On July 9th, 1958, the world witnessed one of the most powerful and devastating tsunamis in history — the Lituya Bay megatsunami. The earthquake that triggered the tsunami had a magnitude of 7.8 to 8.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI. The earthquake caused the displacement of an incredible 90 million tonnes of water into the narrow inlet of Lituya Bay in Alaska, resulting in a megatsunami that was responsible for widespread destruction and loss of life.

The Lituya Bay megatsunami occurred in a remote and sparsely populated region of Alaska. At the time of the event, there were only a few eyewitnesses to the disaster, and it was not until later that the full extent of the damage was realized. However, the event has since become a landmark event in the study of tsunamis and their effects, and it continues to be the subject of scientific research and investigation.

The cause of the Lituya Bay megatsunami was an earthquake in the Fairweather Fault, which runs along the coast of Alaska and British Columbia. The earthquake was a result of the ongoing collision between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. The Fairweather Fault is one of the major faults in this region and has been responsible for several large earthquakes in the past.
