This week, I devoted my weekly column in Spy Community Media’s Eastern Shore newspapers to the race for Maryland’s open U.S. Senate seat. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican who has been outspoken in criticizing Donald Trump, is running for the seat. In my column, I urged readers to vote against him, even if they believed he was the best candidate for the job.

Hogan is running as a Republican and, if victorious, would organize with his party. That could mean Republican control of the Senate. If Trump wins in November and the House remains in Republican hands, having the Senate controlled by Democrats could be essential to blocking toxic Trump proposals. A Democratic Senate would also be able to defeat possible Trump nominees for the Supreme Court.

The column generated a vocal response from readers. Some reject the idea of not voting for the most qualified candidate for public office. Others agreed that keeping the Senate in Democratic hands is a higher priority and justified voting against Hogan.

The article, as published on May 1, may be found here. Comments on the column from Eastern Shore readers may be found…
