Tired of politics, greed, consumerism, and lies? Spend a morning with the birds. That’s what I did. For more than two hours, a menagerie of colorful and, in several cases, fantastic birds reminded me that despite the pandemic, global warming, racism, it's good to be alive.

My outing began this morning at 7 a.m., shortly before sunrise — a time when birds are finishing their previous night’s business. Many different species feed in the early morning before spending the rest of the day either avoiding the Florida heat or predators. A large population of alligators lives in our community. Their diet includes ducks and other wading birds.

When we encountered a large group of ducklings several in our party commented on how cute the ducks were. This prompted one woman to predict that most of them would be gone in a week. Eaten by alligators.
