Recognizing police is okay but not the insurrection

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution on March 17 awarding three Congressional Gold Medals to the Capitol Police as a means of expressing appreciation for their role in rebuffing the January 6 Trump Insurrection. In part, the bill, H.R. 1085, reads:

On January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists forced its way into the U.S. Capitol building and congressional office buildings and engaged in acts of vandalism, looting, and violently attacked Capitol Police officers,” the resolution says, going on to refer to Congress as “the temple of our American democracy” and saying the January riot “will forever stain our nation’s history.

A dirty dozen, all Republicans, voted “no”

Rep. Louis Gohmert (TX) led an effort to remove references to an “insurrection” from the legislation. Without that, he claims, he is all for honoring the Capitol Police. He thus blames H.R. 1085’s author, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for his opposition.
