Donald Trump, What Happened to Bringing Us Together?

The surprise many of us felt when Trump won a return to the White House is over. But what happened to America coming together? It hasn’t happened yet, and given the first two weeks of the Trump transition, it won’t ever happen. This is unfortunate for America and the rest of the world.

Much of America has turned off the news. Viewership at MSNBC and CNN is down dramatically. Friends who hoped and expected a Harris win are not only disappointed, but they feel they were deceived—deceived by the media that could not believe a Trump win was possible.

Angry people are not good at compromise. The idea of accepting the reality that Trump could be president for four long years is hard to take. And what Trump policies are Democrats and other people who rejected Trump supposed to compromise on?

When Trump won, political writers like myself figured they could turn their attention away from the bare-knuckle politics of the campaign and focus on policy. Many Democrats wanted to find something in the Trump agenda that they welcomed. Could Trump stop inflation and lower grocery prices? (A friend…
