Naïve, I hoped Trump could be shamed into participating in the August 23 Republican Presidential Debate. Unfortunately, Trump is incapable of feeling shame. Comfortably ahead in the polls despite a mounting pile of indictments, America's-Dictator-To-Be will not be on stage. And what better way to belittle your opponents than to cast the debate as a forum to help him select a running mate?

That is where we are. Is an authoritarian takeover of America in progress? Maybe. Is what we are witnessing highly disturbing? Yes, especially if you value democracy.

Never in American history has a "base" been so important to a presidential campaign. Unfortunately for America, to the Trump base, the people with "Trump 2024: No More Bullshit" flags flying from their boats and from flagpoles in front of their homes, evidence of criminal activity, including rape, sedition, obstruction of justice, and tax fraud, does not matter. The "Biden Crime Family," Hillary's email server, and the "weaponization" of the Department of Justice evidenced through the prosecution of Trump do.

Trump supporters thrive on the entertainment of the ex-reality TV show host ridiculing his opponents. Nothing is off-limits. Did Ted Cruz's…
