March 29, 2024, Wall Street Journal photo by the author.

I woke up this morning to find a highly unusual Wall Street Journal on my doorstep. The front page was largely blank, bearing only the title "One Year Stolen: Evan Gershkovich, HIS STORY SHOULD BE HERE."

My immediate thought was that Donald Trump would be overjoyed to see the paper. Not a single word about his legal problems, declining mental abilities, or lies. I also thought, "Why has Trump not promised to get Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter held captive by Vladimir Putin, freed on the first day of his return to the White House?" March 29th marked the first anniversary of his detention.

If Trump were asked about Evan, he likely would offer a word salad that possibly included, "America holds hostages, too," and point to what he calls the "January 6th Patriots." He also might offer that he believes Russia's claim that Gershkovich was spying against Russia. Would he suggest that Gershkovich deserves to be in prison for something he may have written critical of Trump?

Maybe Trump has spoken about Even Gershkovich, but if he has, I have not seen it. Freeing Evan Gershkovich is not a high priority for the presumptive 2024…
