Far-Fetched Hopes for the Trump Administration

The Trump presidential transition has been difficult to watch since election day. Three things are worrisome: His nominees, several aggressive foreign policy objectives, and his threats of retribution against his political enemies. These three things make me dread January 20, 2025, but what if the Trump administration isn’t as bad as some fear?

I believe in miracles despite not seeing any in 2024. It would have only taken a minor miracle for me to write about the Harris administration’s plans for the future. With less than a month until Inauguration Day, I am hoping for miracles of all sizes.

Here are my hopes:

Any program of deportations will be conducted humanely. Many — I would say most — of the undocumented people in the U.S. came here for economic opportunity or to escape violence and oppression at home. We need to remember that.

Immigration reform. Donald Trump killed a reasonable immigration reform bill before the election to keep the border security campaign issue alive. That was unfortunate, but now that he is president, I hope he will work with Democrats and his party to enact a bill that creates an easier legal…
