Have We Reached a Trump Tipping Point?

The ex-president wants pardons for insurrectionists and promises protests if he gets indicted

Donald Trump's "Save America" rally in Conroe, Texas January 29, was extraordinary. In addition to bashing Democrats and President Biden, he discussed pardoning those convicted of offenses related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. That comment was trumped with a promise of nationwide protests if prosecutors do anything he deems "illegal" in bringing justice to himself, his companies, or others involved in his business and public activities. He appeared to promise a second attempted coup.

Anyone following Trump's post-presidential career was not surprised by Trump's not-so-subtle threat of violence. It's no longer necessary to review Trump's comments and analyze them. He has repeatedly referred to the January 6 rioters as "patriots."

Trump has also become unambiguous about his short-term agenda — to avoid prosecution by intimidating those that would bring him to justice. Today's more puzzling question is not about who Trump is or what he's up to but why everyone — including Republicans — still supports him.
