Hunter Biden Should Not Go to Jail

Can we not talk about Donald Trump and his thirty-four felonies for a minute? Hunter Biden, the president’s son, has been found guilty on three counts related to his buying and owning a gun while addicted to drugs. He faces up to 25 years in prison. Biden should not go to jail. And that is not because he is President Biden’s son.

Hunter Biden, like thousands of Americans, became addicted to drugs and lost control of himself. Most of what we know about this period of his life comes from the trial and from Hunter Biden’s autobiographical book, Beautiful Things: A Memoir. In the book, Biden details the depths of his addiction and his path to recovery.

While addicted, Hunter Biden engaged in troubling conduct. This included purchasing a gun, most likely for use in suicide. Biden lied on the application for a gun permit. He also owned a gun while addicted to drugs, another federal crime.

Biden never used the gun in the commission of a crime. There is no evidence he carried the weapon during drug buys, threatened anyone with it, or otherwise was planning a crime. He owned the gun for 11 days before Hallie Biden, his brother’s widow, threw it away.
