This week, I dedicated my column in Spy Community Media’s Eastern Shore newspapers to what I call the “Independent Skeptical Voter.” My column was prompted by a conversation with such a voter that started as a polite political discussion and ended just before fists flew. The exchange reminded me that while Democrats have much to be excited about with Kamala Harris as their nominee, they still haven't figured out how to reach skeptical voters.

Who are these skeptical voters who call themselves independent? My experience is that they are people unwilling or unable to accept that pretty much everything that emerges from Trump’s mouth is a lie. Rather than examine facts and accept those that are supported with evidence, they assume that both sides — Democrats and Republicans — lie regularly. In the interest of fairness (give me a break!), they refuse to accept facts like Trump’s criminal conviction, the absence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, or even that the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol was an insurrection.

The column, as published this morning, may be found here.
