Remember Leisure Suit Larry? In the late 1980s and ’90s, a video game series featured a middle-aged loser focused on picking up women, usually unsuccessfully. The main character became shorthand for sleazy men, as in “Bob is a regular Leisure Suit Larry.”
In more ways than one, Donald Trump is a Leisure Suit Larry. As we know, the ex-president was often successful in his extra-marital romantic quests. He dated a Playmate of the Year. A porn star says Trump successfully pursued an affair with her.
Trump, who may have played Leisure Suit Larry while building The Trump Organization empire, may be sleezier than the video game character. Thanks to Trump’s trial, we have heard about dinners where no meal was offered, Trump informing a sex partner that he has a large member, and that he called the porn star “honey bunch.”
Trump has reminded us that the Constitution is not an obstacle to a morally compromised man serving as president and that a candidate who is an amoral narcissist can get elected. The result reminds us that democracy by itself doesn’t guarantee anything. Don’t forget that Hitler came to power via election…
