Pardon Me, Mr. President, But Are You Corrupt?
My Spy editorial for June 4, 2025, about you-know-who
While many political writers are focusing on the fate of Donald Trump's misleadingly named “Big Beautiful Bill” or the on-again, off-again tariff war, I have been reading about pardons and ethical issues. After reading that Mr. Trump has not ruled out the possibility of pardoning Sean “Diddy” Combs, I decided to write about the President’s “personal issues.”
Just this morning, after my piece had been published in Spy Community Media’s newspapers serving the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I read about the rewards that were given to several of the most significant contributors to President Trump’s inauguration. This unpleasant reading came on the heels of reading about more pardons for celebrities and about the Trump family’s “engagement” with cryptocurrency.
All this “news” about the president is ugly, but that would be okay if it weren’t worrisome. The evidence is mounting that the President has engaged in not one, but dozens of impeachable offenses. And, unfortunately, the way the impeachment process works, it is all but impossible to remove a criminal president from office.
