Why cut funding for medical research?
When President Donald Trump selected Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to run the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), it was clear that science-based medical research was in trouble. Once a respected environmental lawyer, Kennedy had turned his attention to vaccines. He was a leading “anti-vaxxer” and wrote a book titled The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health.
Donald Trump has endorsed Kennedy’s theories about Dr. Fauci and given him free rein at the HHS, particularly at the National Institutes of Health NIH). The Trump administration seeks to fundamentally change — and shrink — NIH.
On May 2, the White House released select Fiscal Year 2026 budget details. NIH funding for medical research and other programs is slated to be cut by $17.965 billion.
