‘Cat ladies’ comment is the big Republican news now
Choosing JD Vance as his 2024 running mate is not Donald Trump’s first hiring mistake. Throughout his business and political career, he has made dozens, possibly thousands. Trump may argue that Mike Pence or Michael Cohen was his worst hire, but the choice of JD Vance is worse.
Many of us read Mr. Vance’s autobiography, Hillbilly Elegy. It is an engaging book. After I read it, I recommended it to others. The book was well written. I do not recall anything in it that struck me as weird or controversial, and I did not think to fact-check anything.
The inevitable scrutiny in a run for national political office has now focused on Vance. The Ohio Senator is an easy lift for researchers. He has spouted a cascade of controversial, offensive, quotable quotes. Vance has told us abused women should stay in their marriages, families with children should get additional votes in elections, and, of course, the observation that the country is being run by cat ladies who are miserable and want to share the misery with the rest of us.
