Who wants Canada to become “the 51st State?”

Let’s not talk about how ridiculous it is that President-Elect Trump is calling for Canada to become the 51st State. Trump is relying on Kevin O’Leary, a Canadian best known as a shark on Shark Tank, to make it happen. I hope Mr. O’Leary fails. I don’t want Canada to be the 51st State. Neither do Canadians.

I went to graduate school in Canada, living one year in Montreal and another in Toronto. I liked both cities, but they are as different as night and day. Montreal and the rest of Quebec is French-speaking, unlike the rest of Canada. When in Quebec, Arrêt signs tell you when to stop at an intersection.

Quebec, led by the Parti Quebecois, sought independence from the rest of Canada when I lived in Montreal. More than 30 years later, the party remains a political force in Quebec today. Quebecers are not especially fond of Ontarians but are even less interested in becoming part of the U.S.

When I attended the University of Toronto, I was shocked at the disdain that fellow students expressed against Quebec. Students at the University could recite a list of English monarchs from the 15th century but claimed not to know the name of Quebec’s premier. Most fellow students had never been to Montreal or Quebec City and…
