USA Today Reports on Hybrid Babies
How not to run an advertisement
“Hybrid babies born across the US: World reacts to new generation of half-human, half-animal children with both awe and concern.” That was the headline of what appeared to be the front page of the June 4–6, 2021 USA Today. It got my attention.
Rather than read my New York Times and Washington Post, I went immediately to this earth-shattering news. The story included a photo of an infant sprouting horns and sporting upright ears. It looked real.
The front page also included two other stories, “Hybrids: the greatest mystery of our lifetime” and “General calls hybrids a threat to national security; Activists fight back.” Both stories had bylines.
In my excitement, I had missed the first word under the masthead, “Advertisement.”
The whole front section of the paper was an ad for new series called “Sweet Tooth” streaming on Netflix.
