Ask Your Senators to Vote Against Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education

Seriously. In her hearing yesterday, DeVos demonstrated that she didn’t know basic information about debates in education; she equivocated about rape on college campuses; and she suggested that we might wish to have guns in schools — I kid you not — to protect against bear attacks.

Dear Senator __________,

I am writing again to ask you to please vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. She has no direct experience with public schools, the institutions that educate more than 80 percent of children in the United States. She has been heavily involved in causes that undermine funding for those same institutions, explicitly under the philosophy that doing so forwards her specific religious goals. And just yesterday, in her confirmation hearing, she demonstrated that she lacks a grasp of basic concepts in education, like regimes for doing assessment.

Both the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association oppose DeVos as Secretary of Education. And I am asking you to stand with them.

Best,
