“Spontaneous” Does Not Excuse Unwanted Sexual Advances

If the exhilaration of a big win justifies and excuses grabbing another human being with both hands by the head and kissing them on the mouth is anyone responsible for their behavior when celebrating?

Like so many famous men who only apologize when they get caught, Luis Rubiales is repeatedly and publicly shouting that he will not resign after international outrage at his televised kiss when the Spanish team won the Women’s World Cup.

I was astonished that anyone would find anything but joy in such an exuberant kiss between a couple celebrating a spectacular win. I saw numerous images before I read any captions or articles and wondered if perhaps it was a gay couple and homophobic people were outraged about a homosexual kiss.

To my further astonishment, I read that they are not only not a couple, they are, essentially, colleagues with a power differential — a soccer player and the president of the entire Spanish soccer federation, (RFEF). He is her boss’s boss.

On August 20, 2023, the Spanish women’s soccer team beat the English team, and RFEF President Luis Rubiales celebrated by treating the women on the field quite differently than the men.

He triumphantly grabbed his crotch while standing with the Queen of Spain, Letizia, and her daughter…
