Cleaning can feel like a daunting task, especially if you didn’t grow up doing domestic chores. I was fortunate to have help growing up, so when I left home at 18, I quickly realized how unprepared I was for the realities of maintaining a household. Living on friends’ couches or taking advantage of hotel housekeeping didn’t prepare me for adult life.

It wasn’t until I settled into my own place in my 20s that I discovered just how clueless I was about keeping a clean home. My experiences with bipolar disorder and ASD make executing everyday tasks challenging at times, leading me to let things pile up until I felt overwhelmed by the thought of a massive cleaning session.

However, the secret to a clean and organized space isn’t as complicated as it may seem. If you commit to these nine daily habits, I guarantee that your home will feel fresher and easier to maintain week after week. More importantly, you’ll cultivate a sense of peace for you and your family.

1. Make the Bed

A well-made bed is both comforting and inviting at bedtime. Trust me, your tired self will thank you for this small act!

2. Put Away Clothes

It only takes a few seconds to toss used clothes in the hamper and put away clean laundry. Keeping clothes organized prevents pile-ups and chaos.

3. Tidy as You Go

Before leaving a room, do a quick scan and return items to their rightful places. This simple habit makes a huge difference in maintaining order.

4. Sort the Mail

Open, read, and sort your mail as soon as you bring it inside. Keep a trash bin nearby for junk mail to make this process seamless.

5. Do the Dishes

Make it a habit to wash and put away pots, pans, and any used dishes. If you have a dishwasher, loading and unloading it regularly will save you time in the long run.

6. Spot Clean Spills

Wipe away any spills, whether from the kitchen counter or bathroom sink, as soon as they happen. Quick action prevents stains and larger cleaning tasks later on.

7. Wipe Down Sinks

Since bathrooms are high-traffic areas, keep a cloth nearby to wipe them down daily. A quick clean can make a world of difference.

8. Clean Kitchen Counters

A spotless kitchen welcomes you in the morning and sets a positive tone for your day. A few minutes of upkeep can keep it looking fresh.

9. Clean the Floors

Crumbs can accumulate quickly, especially in the kitchen and dining areas. Use your preferred method to clean them up at the end of each day.

It’s no secret that when our environments are balanced, so too are we. A clean and organized home contributes to a clear mind and a sense of calm. Remember, home is where the heart is; let’s ensure we keep ours healthy and thriving.

And hey, even if you can only manage one task from this list, celebrate that victory and give yourself grace.

I’d love to hear from you! What are your go-to daily habits for keeping your home clean and organized? Share your tips in the comments below and let’s support each other on this journey. Stay lovely, my friends!
