Letter to PA Rep. Dan Frankel — What it really means to have a 20+ week abortion

Dear Representative Frankel,

I am a constituent of yours from Pittsburgh, PA. I am also deeply concerned about PA Senate Bill 3, which would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks.

I am very lucky, in that I have been able to give birth to one healthy son and I am currently 23 weeks pregnant with what doctors believe to be a healthy baby girl. But I know that not all women are so lucky. I have heard so many heart breaking stories of women who get the worst possible news — that their baby is not “compatible with life,” or have such horrible birth defects that the baby would not be able to have any quality of life once born. And often times, the exact nature of these abnormalities and birth defects do not reveal themselves until after 2nd trimester screenings.

It is unimaginably cruel to force these women onto a path that would not be the best for them or their baby, and would not be recommended by any medical doctor. So I urge you to vote “no” on SB3.

I also urge you to do what you can to have your fellow representatives listen to and receive testimony from women, and their doctors, who have had to undergo such late-term abortions. I believe that the pro-life supporters of this bill are operating under the misguided assumption that abortions are always elective and always represent some sort of black-and-white choice between a baby’s life and mother’s convenience. More often than not, abortions represent a tragedy of the worst kind, that mothers must do their best to cope with.

Thank you,
