To Clara: My own precious
June 8, 1929 Saturday Evening
My Own Precious:
This is coming weekend and really I can feel myself slipping into the land of loneliness. However, I shall use the best method available in order to have a “little date” with my precious little sweetheart — write a note.
Clara, I have had two letters from you and really, I must tell you, that I truly love your nice letters. It really inspires me to think of you, to realize what a wonderful girl I have and makes my heart thrill with sincere appreciation to feel assured of the fact that you are soon to be mine in every since of the word.
Clara, I sincerely hope to make you one of the happiest girls in the world. I know I do not know how, but I hope to learn the answer if it be an answer.
Since our past relations have been wonderful. Your letters slept with me last night, and really in my imagination that long black hair and sweet face were present — “Little Precious” goes to slumber land with me each night. Darling, I must not become sentimental and give way to my feelings in this matter, but I do want you to continue to keep in mind that you are my ideal helper the one that I want to live for and with, and if necessary die for.
Mrs. Hughes must be our good friend, for she ask me about you every day while you were in the hospital and appeared to be so sympathetic. I think she is so nice. Good friends and fellowship with one another should be cultivated. For instance, I have no doubt but we love each other supremely — however, on being away will really prove to some extent our devotion to each other. I miss you in everything, and therefore can in a broader since appreciate your greatness.
Sweetheart, remember he is not growing tired standing guard as your precious face keeping watch over his own while precious sleeps and too, remember the great desire of his heart is that he may always be able to say “All is Well”.
Lovingly Yours,
Riley
