What it Takes to be a DCore Miner (Part 2)
Miners are essential to the functionality of the DCore blockchain. They are also responsible for maintaining the network 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone holding DCT can become a miner, but only the most reliable and trustworthy miners are voted as one of the 33 active witnesses maintaining our network.
As we established in Part 1, it is immensely important that all miners be dependable, meaning they have a functioning node and are not constantly missing blocks. In order to set up a solid miner node, we’ve reached out to RoelandP (featured in Part 1) and another special guest and fellow miner, Jens Schendel.
Between the two of them, they have created some of the most thorough and useful guides on setting up DCore miner nodes and the importance of mining in the DECENT ecosystem. With their expert advice and recommendations, along with our own developer team support, anyone interested in becoming a miner can do so with confidence.
Besides the absolute basics of needing a computer with internet access and electricity to power it 24/7, you will need to be at least a little computer savvy. “The basis for everything should be Linux (Debian or Ubuntu 16.04),” explains Jens. “You need experience with Linux and software/hardware.”
Here are the fundamental requirements for setting up your DCore miner node (as recommended by Roeland and Jens):
- A server with fast processing capabilities and large RAM space (i.e. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 2 and 32 GB+ RAM)
- Linux kernel > Version 4
- 4 Cores processing speed
- 500 MB HDD
- A reasonable amount of swap space (let’s say RAM + 100 MB)
- The ability to run your server 24/7 (our DCore blockchain doesn’t take breaks, so neither can your mining node if you want to be an active miner.)
There are probably hundreds of configurations that will work, but the above requirements have already proven successful, in fact very successful since they are used by RoelandP himself, our highest voted miner. Once you have this setup (or the computational equivalent) you are ready to jump into the technical configuration process.
