Each week, Decent Labs highlights one of our portfolio companies. The Decent Labs Founder Series will give you an inside look at the struggles, triumphs, and insights of our founders.

This week, we will introduce you to the Founder and CEO of BlockMedx, Michael Brunner. The former Big Ten (D-1) defensive end took notice of a crisis impacting his community and country while he was in college: the opioid epidemic. While at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michael experienced the impact of this crisis first hand when his close friend died of an overdose from a prescription opioid. This epidemic was, and is, impacting all communities regardless of background, socioeconomic status, and location. Michael took the drive and determination he learned as an athlete and focused his energy on solving the root cause of the epidemic.

Michael, now armed with a doctorate of pharmacy degree, created BlockMedx to solve the problem he first encountered in college. BlockMedx is a healthcare technology company that utilizes cutting edge blockchain technology to provide the only secure and regulatory compliant solution for transmitting and receiving DEA controlled prescriptions.

The future for BlockMedx is equally as exciting as how it came to be. Decent Labs and BlockMedx are working together to ensure that their technology can seamlessly integrate with legacy systems and that the API can be used for others to build upon. BlockMedx is focused on providing a secure and compliant system that solves the core issue that Michael originally saw while also serving as a communication tool for physicians, patients, and pharmacies.

What’s next for Michael and BlockMedx? The team will be launching their API in the very near future which will open up a world of possibilities to developers and other companies looking to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
