DML Project Update — 1 June 2019

Dear DML Community,

Here is our latest update about our research and development progress. While the user facing use case is one of the key for mass adoption, design and develop a scalable and stable infrastructure is another.

In DML infrastructure, the system has to be able to cater with micro-transactions for a large group of data owners, machine learning activities, and marketplace activities. And high transaction cost, slow transaction speed, scalability issue of existing public blockchains would be a burden for DML use cases.

In order to enable us to leapfrog our development, we are currently testing and evaluating various existing blockchain infrastructure in the industry that meets DML’s needs.

Cosmos SDK is one of the blockchain infrastructure we have deeply looked into. And here we would like to share how potentially Cosmos SDK be used in DML infrastructure.

Scalability

The default consensus engine available within the Cosmos SDK is Tendermint Core. Tendermint is a BFT consensus protocol which can have a block time on the order of 1 second and handle up to thousands of transactions per second.

The instant finality and processing capacity fit DML’s needs in frequent and quick transaction and activities. And as a standalone application specific blockchain, application on the blockchain will enjoy a better environment in terms of transaction speed and cost.

Interoperablility

Cosmos SDK consists of a IBC (Inter-blockchain Communication) module which allows communicate tokens and value with other blockchains. IBC can be used by any application which builds on top of reliable & secure interchain communication. Example applications include cross-chain asset transfer, atomic swaps, multi-chain smart contracts (with or without mutually comprehensible VMs), and data & code sharding of various kinds.

IBC enables DML to join the internet of blockchain, to cooperate with other blockchain infrastructure / services. It helps to enrich DML ecosystem and also brings DML service to other blockchains.

Usability

Tendermint and Cosmos SDK communicated via Application-Blockchain Interface (“ABCI”). Developer can focus their time in developing application specific logic instead of protocol or consensus, and they can program with any language. Thus, DML can focus on business logic and user experience without needing to understand its complex low-level functionality.

Going Forward

While Cosmos SDK might be a suitable candidate of blockchain infrastructure, we will continue to look for choices to expedite the development and makes DML infrastructure better. Thanks for your continuous support to us as a pioneer to deliver our mission of democratizing the big data and machine learning spaces. We are committed to make it happen. More updates are expected about our project development progress, please stay tuned with us.
