Dear Creative Who Has Yet to Find Their “Thing”

You’ve spent years — maybe decades — jumping from one venture to the next with the hope of finding your Thing.

Your Thing. You know what I’m talking about. The thing by which people will know you.

J.K. Rowling has her thing. Elon Musk has his. Their Things are so obvious I don’t even need to mention them.

You think to yourself:

When I find my Thing I can finally be happy because it’s what I’m meant to do with my life.

It’s frustrating not knowing what your Thing is.

Maybe it’s this next book you’re working on.

Maybe it’s this side business.

Maybe it’s an abstract painting.

Maybe it doesn’t exist.

And that’s okay.

Because maybe your Thing is the creative process itself.

Maybe your Thing is bringing life to the abstract.

Maybe your Thing is to keep doing what you are doing. And never stop.
