Story Always Comes First
There are so many ways to tell a story now.
You could write up a lengthy post on Facebook. You can share a tidbit of your day on Instagram Stories. You could start a vlog.
No matter what medium (pun intended) you choose to share your story, always remember this:
Story comes first.
I spent well over an hour last evening researching how to create a 5 second intro for my vlog. I then read about drones and eventually watched a Casey Neistat video.
No where in that evening did I focus on my story. No where did I improve my storytelling skills.
Everything else, the cool gadgets, the special effects, is superficial.
The same applies to any artform. If you don’t have an interesting story to tell, no $1,000 drone is going to make it any better.
Here are a few “real world” examples:
- Before focusing on the layout, does your resume tell a compelling story of your skills and potential?
- If you’re a bore, fancy clothes and a $200 haircut won’t convince your date that you’re worth their time.
- No one’s going to buy hoagies for your kids band camp fundraiser, unless they no the story behind why this camp is important.
Focus on the story first. Always.
