The greatest investment you can make
Although I’m still quite new to this entrepreneurial scene, to even get to the point of leaving my full time job, I needed to invest my time and energy wisely.
I spent time creating, I spent time working, but the biggest return came from one source: relationships.
I’ve heard a few entrepreneurs lately (Isaac Morehouse and Gary Vaynerchuk to name a few) talking about how relationships are the best investment you can make when starting out.
Everyone has something they are good at doing. Everyone is knowledgeable in a specific area. But what separates folks who go on to do big things versus those who fizzle out is the network they’ve built around them and the social capital they’ve been able to raise.
Here’s the thing, the market will reward quality products and services, but the market is quick to forget you. However, a quality deed done onto others is never forgotten.
I’ll take that investment any day.
If you are looking to build social capital, here are a few simple ways:
- Be a decent human being
- Deliver tremendous value for free (or at least 10x of what someone paid)
- Care about other people and check in from time to time
