The Yes-man, the Middleman, and the Businessman
The Yes-man is compensated by their ability to perform a given task.
The Middleman is compensated by their ability to tack on margins on what they deliver.
The Businessman is compensated by their ability to solve other people’s problems.
The Yes-man is replaceable when the series of tasks they perform becomes automated (or cheaper for someone else to do).
The Middleman is replaceable when another Middleman comes around with slimmer margins.
The Businessman is replaceable when he is no longer solving a problem people have.
Of these three, who do you want to be?
To me it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, as long as I am resourceful enough to adapt and change, I have nothing to fear.
