How to setup a metered WIFI connection

If you don’t have WIFI at your home (like me), getting connected can be a bitch. I had a bought a 3G modem some years ago but I no longer use it. As a last result, I am left to create a hotspot on my smartphone and use it to connect all my other devices in the house. It can get expensive since mobile data bundles are expensive but I just have to do it until the ISP company decides to extend their home offer to my neighbourhood.

For anyone who uses windows, you know how the updates can be annoying when you are on this kind of plan. Automatic updates from nowhere eat up all your data bundles and you’re left with a big ‘fuck you’ and no Internet access. The simplest way to go about is to force Windows updates. Here’s an article that shows you how to.

Apart from that, you can also set up a metered connection which minimizes data usage and saves your data stash. If you haven’t stopped Windows updates, only the updates that have high priority get installed. Of course, Microsoft sets the priority and I have no idea under which criteria.

Anyway, here’s how you do it

Assuming you’ve already created your hotspot, if you don’t know how to read here. Connect your Windows computer to the WIFI network.

Go to settings and select Network and Internet. Select WIFI, at the bottom of the WIFI screen, select Advanced Options.

Scroll down to Metered Connection and slide it to on. Now you can stop those Automatic updates as long as you’re on that metered connected.

NB: Once you get off that connection, Windows will go back to automatic updates.
