Reliance Jio Announces New All-In-One Plans

Remember the whole IUC hoopla from a couple of weeks ago? If your memory is a little hazy, allow us to jog your memory through a quick crash course. IUC is charge paid to telcos on whose network a call terminates. IUC is enforced by TRAI. Recently, Jio announced that they will now ask their customers to pay IUC at 6 paise/minute as charged by TRAI. Unsurprisingly, there was a huge backlash on this by the customers (aided by the loud noises made by Jio’s competitors hoping to capitalise on the chaos). That’s the short version of it. If you wish to know more about it, then we suggest you read this blog.

After offering top-up plans of ₹10, 20, 50, up to ₹1000 for IUC calling.

Now, Jio has announced 4 new plans which are all inclusive of IUC charges. Let’s explore whether these plans are worth considering.

There are one, two, and three month plans. Each of these plans will offer 2GB/day 4G data and 1000 IUC calling minutes for ₹222, 333, 444, respectively. There’s actually one more plan. ₹555 plan which has 2GB/day 4G data, 84 days of validity, and 3,000 IUC calling minutes. These plans are actually not bad.

If you look at the ₹444 plan, it gives us data of 2GB/day at a cost which is ₹5 lower than their previous 2GB/day plan which was ₹449. It also gives 1,000 IUC calling minutes which would cost around ₹80 extra. So far so good. According to TRAI Performance Indicators Report April-June 2019, an average user makes around 200 minutes of off-network calls per month. As per that a 1000 minute quota should be more than plenty. Considering the fact that Jio to Jio calls are free, it essentially means that they have dropped prices for their existing 2GB/day plan.

So, what are your thoughts on the new plans? Let us know in the comments below. Until next time, keep it tuned to DeCode for all things tech.
