Reliance Industries Limited’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is an annual shareholder meeting where Reliance takes the wraps off of their latest innovations. They unveil a bunch of new products and services, and takes a look back at their progress in the past year and what they are looking forward to in the coming year. This was the 42nd AGM and it was packed with new launches, and some tough decisions to leave out a highly anticipated product.

Following are the two major announcements from the AGM.

  • JioFiber:

This has been in beta testing for over a year. It was announced on July 5, 2018 and its registrations for beta testing went live on August 15, 2018. Since then the company has allowed a select few customers to take advantage of their fiber to the home (FTTH) services, which promises to deliver high speed internet at aggressively competitive prices. Based on the positive response from trial runs in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Surat, and Vadodara etc, they finally decided to officially launch the product to the masses.

What’s on offer?

  • Plans will be priced between Rs. 700 and 10,000
  • Data speeds up to 1 GBPS
  • Free voice calls for everyone
  • Lowest international calling rates
  • Bundled subscriptions with major OTT platforms
  • First-day-first-show movie screenings
  • Commercial launch on September 5th

The biggest addition was the offering of free 4K LED TV and 4K set-top box with JioFiber annual plans. This kind of an offer is unheard of in the tech industry.

  • Microsoft Partnership:

They announced a globally unique long-term partnership with Microsoft to expedite India’s digital transformation. Together, they will be launching new cloud data centers in India, to make sure that more organizations can access the tools and platforms they require to construct their own digital capability. It was also announced that they will be offering Office 365 for free with JioFiber connections to startups so more organizations can empower their employees with a modern workplace. Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services will also be available to more devices, creating new, breakthrough intelligent experiences, with support for 13 Indian languages and others to come.

Other announcements include:

  1. Jio Postpaid Plus to offer the lowest postpaid tariffs in India. Along with their new fixed-mobile converged architecture, they will be able to offer faster fixed line broadband to homes and business establishments.
  2. Over the next 12 months, Jio to install one of the largest blockchain networks in the world in India, with tens of thousands of nodes operational from day one.
  3. Jio will be setting up a pan-India Edge Computing and Content Distribution network starting with tens of thousands of nodes.
  4. Unlimited calling to US/Canada for ₹500/month.

Which announcement interests you the most? To us, JioFiber seems like the best thing to come out of the AGM, considering the great offers and reasonable tariffs.
