Hallelujah! Netflix Is The Winner at CES 2019!

No, this is not a clickbait. Yes, I know Netflix wasn’t even at CES, let me explain! CES 2018 was celebrated with a bang! Introducing robot strippers was a bold move but giving a fresh perspective on the fun side of the robots like Boston Dynamics’ Spot!
CES 2019 offers a whole new world of mobiles, automobiles, smart devices, laptops and other technologies that have the potential to shape the next few years of mankind. This year (as we were anticipating) it came packed with lots of TV innovations that can transform our home-viewing experience. Have a look!
LG Signature: OLED TV R

It is there and it is not! Let me explain this to you, it is essentially a TV with a roll-up display. It can disappear to preserve the aesthetics of a room. You don’t need to plan a space for TV anymore, just put it anywhere. It is a revolutionary product that will revamp our TV viewing in the coming years. It is a 65” rollable OLED 4K display.
The device is aesthetically pleasing that it can easily pass as a piece of furniture. It is sleek and customisable. There’s also a ‘Line Mode’ where ⅔ of the display drops down and it switches to a custom UI which allows you to play music, shows weather and other stuff. It will support Alexa and Google Assistant. It will also pair up with AirPlay 2 that will allow Screen Mirroring from Apple devices (because of their recent friendly behaviour). The company says that you are not compromising on the display if you buy a roll-up TV. I am a little sceptical about its durability, though. As it is in a nascent phase, I am not sure how well it works. Still, hoping for the best.
LG’s 88-inch 8K OLED TV

LG came up with a TV that supports 8K viewing. Imagine the life-like experience of 4K, now, double it! It has a huge 88” screen with the fastest motion picture response of 3.5 ms. It offers a massive upgrade to LG’s Crystal Sound Screen Technology that embeds the sound system directly on the screen, thereby, removing the need of speakers. Consequently, the screen itself can produce 3.2.2 channel Dolby Atmos audio.
Samsung’s 219-inch Micro LED TV a.k.a The Wall

The TV is made from modular panels that are stitched to function in a synergy making a TV of unbelievable proportions. If you get close you can actually see the seams but after 6-feet it is practically seamless and you probably (just probably!) won’t watch a huge TV from that close (if you want to watch it as a whole). Although it is 4K, not 8K at this size it won’t matter. Plus, 8K content barely exists right now. It basically is a modular TV i.e. you can customise the size of this TV. However, MicroLEDs are not subject to the problems of OLEDs like burn-ins.
It is 30mm in width and the display is bright and crisp, and will also support Google Assistant and Alexa.
Now, coming back to the title, what will you do with such TVs? Yes, Linear TV, and? Stream Netflix! Other OTT platforms like PrimeVideo, Hulu, Hotstar, etc. You will definitely want some mindblowing content to watch on these mesmerizing displays. Read this to know more about how streaming is taking over linear tv. A Nielsen Study revealed that in the last five years, there has been a 40% drop in traditional TV viewing by 18 to 24-year-olds.
‘As per the latest Broadcast India survey (BI-2018) by the joint industry body BARC India the country now has 197 million TV homes, up from 183 million in 2016. While the growth has been at a steady 7.6%, total TV penetration is now at 66% against 64% in the last survey. The BI-2018 survey also notes that the number of individuals with access to television has gone up to 835 million; more than the population of Europe. In contrast, smartphone penetration in the country is still at around 300 million’, says The Economic Times. So, in order to stream more content you will subscribe to more streaming services, hence, it will be a win for them!
These are some latest innovations we saw, stay tuned for more updates on CES 2019. If you would like to dig into the history of CES and everything amazing that was first introduced at a CES, then you can read this blog.
