Reliance Jio at its 41st AGM announced the launch of JioGigaFiber broadband services and promoted it with tagline “Banao India ko Giga Ready.”

JioGigaFiber will be launched after two years of testing phase. Its testing has proved that the broadband service is capable of offering 700Mbps speeds on an average while the company claims that JioGigaFiber download speed will reach up to 1Gbps and its upload speed will reach up to 100Mbps.

JioGigaFiber registrations will begin from August 15 in India and on this day, people will also be able to book a new Jio Phone 2 from the MyJio App and Jio.com, which is the company’s official website. Coming to the JioGigaFiber broadband services, Reliance Jio will be introducing its new JioGigaFiber in 1,100 Indian cities in the initial stage.

So what is Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband?

Fiber networks are not required to be changed post installation as the companies upgrade them with latest technology that creates the electronic light pulses and not by replacing the fiber cables.

Reliance Jio GigaFiber:

Jio GigaFiber will be the largest greenfield fixed-line broadband rollout anywhere in the world, with rollout happening in 1,100 cities of India simultaneously. The GigaTV Set Top Box which will come bundled with JioGigaFiber Broadband Services. The JioGigaTV is a 4K enabled Media Streaming Box. The STB will also have voice commands in most Indian languages.

India already has FTTH broadband services available from operators like BSNL, Airtel and others.

The registrations for Jio GigaFiber broadband services will commence from August 15. You can apply for the Jio GigaFiber service directly, and the company will provide you its broadband service to your location depending on the availability and infrastructure.

Reliance Jio aims to bring in Digital Freedom with a massive connectivity platform and a nation-wide reach.

The incumbents in the fixed-line broadband market or fiber-to-the-home market include Den networks, Hathway, ACT Fibernet and state-run telcos BSNL and MTNL. Ahead of Jio’s launch, Airtel has announced revised tariffs to ensure that it doesn’t lose market share after JioGigaFiber’s launch. In a rush to make up for the same, Airtel announced lower rates last week for its V-fiber service and the option of data roll over at the end of each month until October 2018.

BSNL has also announced higher FUPs on its existing plans. However, the plans themselves remain expensive.

How to apply for Jio GigaFiber?

Registrations open on August 15. Interested customers will not have to pay anything upon registration as the service will be provided in high demand areas. Although, with 1100 cities targeted for the launch in India, customers can rest assured that they will be able to avail the service soon. Multiple registrations from the same neighborhood will fast track installation of the service in a locality. Reliance Jio will then install a Jio GigaRouter at your home or office. This router will provide “wall-to-wall high speed Wi-Fi coverage.” The company will also install the GigaTV set-top box for those with a large screen TV and provide a voice-activated remote to users. Consumers will be able to watch “600+ TV channels, thousands of movies, millions of songs, and any other type of content possible” with this set-top box the company says. The presentation showed apps such as JioTV, JioCinema, JioTVCall, JioSmartLiving, JioNetVelocity, JioCloud, MediaShare, and JioStore on a TV screen. Additionally, the GigaTV will also support video calls using a Jio network along with mobile phones and tablets on any computer.

All in all, the latest offering from Reliance Jio will take the Indian household another step closer to having a smart home, without investing in expensive, imported brands like Amazon, Google and Samsung. This will mark another milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a digital economy.
