2018 has been a great year for tech. Multiple cameras in a phone, bezel-less beauties, ditching the headphone jack (not so great), but a great year, otherwise. We have a lot to look forward to in 2019. So, without wasting any more of your time, let me give you what you clicked on this article for.

1. Foldable Displays:

We got a glimpse of what foldable displays could look like back at CES 2018. But, shit got real when an America-based Chinese tech company Royole first showcased a working prototype of a folding phone they call Flexpai. It wasn’t perfect, but, oh, it was beautiful. To witness a phone’s display folding in reality without snapping into two pieces was truly mesmerizing. Foldable tech gathered more traction at CES 2019, where LG announced the world’s first rollable OLED TV. It is a thing of beauty. The whole 65 inches of screen rolls down into a metal casing like paper within a matter of seconds. It’s easy to say that foldable tech is going to take different shapes in 2019 (all puns intended!).

2. 5G:

Though, I believe, that we won’t be seeing 5G becoming a commercial product as we have 4G today, any time sooner than 2020. But, it is still going to be all the rage in 2019. A lot of smartphone manufacturers have already promised to launch at least one flagship in 2019. 5G is going to be great, it is meant to be. It is an innovation, it is new, and it is going to be better. As pointed out by Ericsson India chief Nitin Bansal at IMC 2018, “We don’t say it’s a revolution –we say it’s an evolution“. If you want to read more about 5G then you can read this blog. I’m sure, we all are very hopeful that with the launch of 5G, Jio will bring more free hi-speed data for us like they did last time. We can be hopeful, right?

3. Gesture-based interaction: the future of input technology?

The way we interact with our devices is key to our experience. It determines what we can do with them. Before touchpads became the norm, it was keypads all around. Recently, voice control has been picking up quite a lot, with smart assistants like Alexa, Google Now, Siri and more. It has been spreading like a virus, from smartphones to smart homes and even cars, it’s just everywhere. All this is alright, but according to some tech enthusiasts, the future is all about gesture controls. I am sure you have watched Iron Man swiping on a transparent holographic display or giving commands to his computer using gestures and it sure looks very cool and intriguing, but what if I told you, that day is not far when we are able to do such cool stuff in reality? Google has already assigned a team to work on this technology. It’s called Project Soli.

4. AI & Robotics:

AI has been very popular in the recent past, and you can read all the reasons why, in this blog. What we see and know about AI today is barely 10% of the whole technology. AI in future is going to grow, and some scientists like Elon Musk and late Stephen Hawking believed that AI can become harmful to humans if we don’t regulate it properly. Musk has even started a company in order to work towards a more regulated version of AI, the company is called OpenAI. You should Google it, interesting stuff. Talking about robotics, we have seen a lot of new robots emerge in the recent past, things like Aibo, which was recently updated at the CES 2019. Other than that we have also seen robots like the Boston Dynamics’ Spot. A lot of new and unique robots were on display at the recent CES, including Lovot, a robot that just wants to cuddle with you. Ubtech’s Walker, on the other hand, can lend a helping hand at home. It is a bipedal robot that works well with its hand-eye coordination. It is 4.7 feet, totally huggable robot and you better hug it before robots take over the world (be on their good side). It has stabilisers to smoothen its walking. Samsung’s exosuits combine wearable technology with robotics to make a gadget that connects the ankle, knee and hips. It can certainly benefit people with mobility issues like the elderly and help them to climb the stairs and do everyday tasks efficiently.

5. Electric Vehicles:

I firmly believe that we will be moving significantly further in the electric and self-driving vehicle space, with innovations like Daimler’s semi-autonomous trucks, and Yandex, a driverless taxi, it is for sure that future is going to be all things autonomous. How can we not mention Tesla and Elon Musk while we are on the topic of electric vehicles and self-driving cars? We have covered this topic extensively in our blogs, Auto-Focus at CES 2019 and Future of Electric Vehicles in India. Don’t forget to give it a read!

2019 is going to brighter than ever, and why shouldn’t it be? Tech is all about innovations & making our lives better.
