Taking Responsibility for Your Church

If they aren’t accepting of people like you, why stay put?

Suppose you lived in a small town where it seemed like there was a grocery store on every corner. You had more than 10 to choose from, all within a short distance from your home. Competition was fierce, prices were low, and it was easy to find whatever you wanted. In such a scenario, you’d be unlikely to keep going back to a store you didn’t like.

Christian churches seem quite plentiful in the United States. No matter where I go, I never seem to be far from one. There are so many choices! I wish I could say the same for grocery stores, but I have few choices in that department.

Some Christians complain that their church isn’t very accepting of people like them. Since they seem to have so many choices, I wonder why they return. Wouldn’t trying another option make sense? But what if they can’t find a more accepting option? They could consider joining the ranks of Christians who have left church behind.

They could stick with their church and try to change it from within. I’ve known more than a few Christians who have settled for that approach. I have yet to see it result in the kind of progress they seek. In the meantime, they continue to support a church that stands for things that run counter to their…
