The Challenge

Hi! This is my third article in favor of atheism. Although I plan to write dozens of more pieces, this article will be a little special. In this article, I give a challenge– a challenge that will decide whether my plans will be executed or not.

This challenge is to all the believers of the world. I will raise six questions about God in this article. If any believer in the world could answer all six of these questions to my satisfaction, then I would stop writing against God forever, and this will prove to be my last article on atheism.

I realize that the condition of the challenge “to my satisfaction” may feel a little unfair to some people, but trust me– I will be frank regarding whether I am fully satisfied. After all, there is just one reason behind my writing all these articles– to know a confirmed answer to the question, “Whether God exists or not?” I want nothing more than that.

If no one can answer all the six questions, I will continue with my current belief that “God does not exist” and write articles favoring atheism. If someone happens to answer all the questions or perhaps entirely decimates them, then that would be a good enough reason for me to believe that God indeed exists, and I would stop writing such articles. As simple as that.

If you are up for the challenge, the comment section is all yours. Without further ado, let’s get on with it. I will start with my strongest argument.

“The Set of Six”

Question 1: Are most religious texts not wrong in stating that God first created a man and woman out of nowhere, and they, in turn, populated the Earth?

“How did humans come into being?” Every religion in the world has a theory for this question. Most religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc., follow a pretty simple explanation that God first made a male and a female, and they, in turn, populated the Earth.

Today this explanation is known to be one hundred percent wrong. As per Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution (TOE)” in 1859, humans evolved from apes. TOE is genuine, and various skeletal specimens of many species that evolved between apes and Homo Sapiens have also been discovered.

Still, many believers don’t hesitate to question the TOE. I want to make it crystal clear here itself. TOE has been accepted by the scientific community after thorough analysis and research, but still questioning this theory is as stupid as challenging Newton’s laws of motion.

Great! Now that we have established most religious texts as wrong and TOE as unarguably correct, things are about to get interesting.

So these texts that we found to be wrong, what are they? Are they some random ancient self-help book written by some random person, or perhaps some ancient research paper written on some not-so-important topic? No, these are considered holy books, written not just by any random guy but by intellectual people. People were thought to have a solid relationship with God. And these people didn’t write whatever they thought of, but they were believed to be writing down God’s words, his message to humanity.

Alas! Does that mean God was wrong in describing such an essential part of human history? Was the almighty, believed to see all, know all, the creator and the destroyer, wrong? Also, if such a basic concept was wrong, doesn’t that open up the possibility for many more such ideas to be wrong? And if that’s the case, then the credibility and trustworthiness of such texts become highly questionable. And I would like to point out again– we are not talking about some random text here. These are holy books.

Do you realize all the mess we are in? Now, my question to believers after all this explanation is simple– How do you defend this?

Question 2: Most religious texts boast a rich history of magic and supernatural powers. But where are these powers now? Why are religions helpless today? Why can’t they use magical powers to bring a positive change in the society?

As I write, the world continues to battle a pandemic. 700 million infected and 7 million dead. Thankfully, the current situation has significantly improved, and the pandemic appears to be in control. But we all have witnessed the wrath of the pandemic. There was a time when daily cases almost touched 4 million. In those days, there was a shortage of everything– masks, sanitizers, hospital beds, and even graves.

In those dangerous times, the only thing that stood between us and the pandemic was science. More than 120,000 healthcare workers sacrificed their lives during the pandemic, scientists worked at break-neck speed to develop vaccines, and industries worked at total capacity to manufacture them. And it was only due to these factors that we have odds in our favor today.

But the question is– Where were the religious folks during this time? What was their contribution? What did the monks, priests, and pastors do with their vast spiritual knowledge to ease the people’s suffering? After all, they take great pride in their bulky religious texts, sophisticated mantras, and prayers. Did none of that knowledge come to help? Could they do nothing on the spiritual front in those difficult times?

Imagine you opened up your television during covid times one day and learned that all your religion’s great intellectuals would hold a giant religious ceremony consisting of mantras, prayers, and oblation. The purpose of this ceremony was to use all the spiritual knowledge and reduce the intensity of the coronavirus. Wouldn’t it be the sweetest news you might have heard in a long time? That day your heart would have filled up with pride in your religion.

But wait, here we are, back on Earth, only to realize that this was too sweet a dream to be true. No such ceremony ever took place and never will. You know why? Because they are not capable of such a feat. All those boastful fairy tales about powerful gods and goddesses with highly advanced weapons, and at the same time, a human society that also had some share of the God’s power, with their own weapons and powerful rituals and mantras, but when the need arises, all that turns into “all talk, no show.”

But don’t worry, I will tell you what they can do. They are capable of telling fantastic fairy tales about gods, giving us false hope and satisfaction, and gulping tens of thousands of donated dollars daily without a single burp.

Question 3: If God exists, then does it not follow that ghosts also live, since if there are good spirits, there must also be evil spirits?

“Do you believe in ghosts?”

The answer to this question for most of us is a NO. After all, ghosts seem like a fancy concept exploited by the film industry. “Ghosts don’t exist!” That’s what we often tell our children, but there is a twist.

If you believe in God, you should also believe in ghosts with the same conviction. Because if good spirits exist, then by argument, evil spirits must also exist. So this question presents you with an option, what will you choose to believe– that both God and demons exist, or none of them do?

This question is a bit different from the rest of my questions, but it can give you a new perspective.

Question 4: Religious texts have given very detailed descriptions of God, but in all such cases God’s behaviour is shown pretty similar to humans. But since God is believed to be the creator of the entire universe(s), his intelligence is unfathomably huge. A creature with such level of intelligence would have a totally different behaviour than mere humans. But religious texts show his behaviour to be much similar to humans — which is a contradiction and a clear indication that such texts are wrong. How do you explain this?
Further, there are millions of species on this planet and probably billions more in the entire universe(s). Also, God is a being much superior to humans. Still religious texts give the impression that a majority of Gods have looks very similar to humans. This is highly improbable and totally absurd. How do you explain this?

Humans- Infinitesimal beings in a vast universe(s) with limited intelligence and limited capabilities

God- The creator (supposed by many) of the infinite universe(s), containing an endless number of stars, most of which have many planets orbiting them, and possibly some of these planets might be inhabited by other living beings as well; a being with an unfathomable amount of intelligence and capabilities

After this short comparison between humans and God, one thing is obvious– the difference between the two is totally ridiculous. God is at a different level than humans, so high that words can’t even describe it. Try to realize this difference and remember it in your mind.

Now, suppose the brightest human among 8 billion people is given a task– to try and describe God– his behavior, actions, way of thinking, etc. Now remember how God is a being at a totally “unfathomable” level of abilities and intelligence, and answer– How good would this person’s description of God be? Of course, it will be poor and far away from the truth. With its limited intelligence, the human mind cannot hope to predict the behavior of a being a thousand times more intelligent (let’s assume this number for convenience) than it. Our brain limits us there. Our imagination limits us there. Our creativity limits us there.

We cannot know how a being such as God would act, his way of thinking, and his behavior.

But let’s stop there for a second. What about the thousands of bulky religious books all over the world? They have described God and contain many stories about God and his acts; what about them?

Yes, they have, and that’s the point. In all such literature I have seen and read, God appears like a calm and composed human. And that’s it. The creator of a universe(s), who is a thousand times more intelligent than humans, still thinks and acts just like a human! His approach to problems, his analysis of the problem, and his solution to the problem is nothing more than that of a wise human. Wow!

That’s the crappy part about religious texts; they tried their best to describe God, but how could they? They are humans, after all, and their imaginations are limited. As a result, the humans who aimed to describe God ended up telling him as another human. But that’s not it; the expanse of their ego was such that they decided that most Gods must have looked similar to humans. The creator of the universe(s) looked like a human! What RUBBISH! And that’s how redundant and meaningless the religious texts are. Their writers decided they could write whatever they wanted or felt was right without contemplating.

Religion is the backbone for faith in God, and if the religious texts are redundant, then doesn’t that raise a serious question about God’s existence? My dear believers, I would love to see you navigate this question!

Question 5: If God exists, why has he let the population of atheists increase over the last decades? Why is he just watching us go in the wrong direction and still does nothing about it?

In the early 1900s, atheism was a reasonably unpopular concept, and you would rarely come across people who would describe themselves as atheists. But the proportion of atheists has significantly risen today. Today roughly 10 percent of the world population comprises atheists. THIS IS AN INTERESTING OBSERVATION!

Now, the population of atheists increasing in the world can only have two explanations:

First- If we assume that a God is sitting above us, it becomes crystal clear that he does not give a damn about this world. This seems obvious because the atheist population continues to rise despite his presence, indicating that he is just watching more and more people go in the wrong direction but still chooses not to correct them. He is just watching non-believers increase in number- people who hate God, question his existence, crack jokes, mock him, and still, this does not bother God.

God is believed to be almighty and extremely powerful. He can change the world’s fate with just a snap of his finger, yet more and more people are turning atheists in front of him, and he is totally calm about it. He does nothing to prevent people from going in the wrong direction, believing false ideas. This does not make any sense. Also, remember that this contradiction arises because we have assumed that God exists. Hence this analysis bolsters the belief that God does not exist!

Second- If we assume that God does not exist, then the above observation about the increasing atheist population makes perfect sense. There is no higher power to govern the world; hence, the world is flowing with its momentum. Things of all kinds are happening randomly; therefore, there are believers as well as atheists. And if the atheist population has increased in the past decades, then that means that more people are going in the correct direction, and their belief is correct.

Question 6: If God exists, why must we worship him to show our devotion or ask for help? Does he not know about our nature and our current condition? Is flattery necessary to get God’s blessings? If not, then all those religions who claim worship to be super important and focus a lot on worshipping, are they not wrong?

Let’s assume for a moment that God exists. So now we have someone who created the world and all its living beings. And from what religions tell us, we must worship this entity. But the question is WHY?

Let’s suppose for a moment that you are a God. You create the world and all the beings in it. Now, what would you want these beings to be like? Should they worship you occasionally and smother you with gifts such as sweets, flowers, drinks, etc., or have gratitude towards you and focus on living their life in the best way possible– by eliminating their evils and being a good and responsible human being. Which type of human being would you be more likely to bless– the devotee or the good and responsible one?

Unfortunately, religions today teach us that devotion is necessary to get God’s blessings. But is this not a narrow-minded concept– “If you want God’s blessings, then you must worship him”? It feels as if God is like some egoistic king who rewards only those who flatter him. This indeed feels like a very shallow description of God. Why should God want people to compliment him? It feels so unwise and human-like. As I mentioned in Question 4, humans who tried to describe God ended up telling him as another human!

The question is, WHY IS ANY WORSHIP AT ALL NECESSARY TO GET GOD’S BLESSINGS? Should God not bless the righteous, responsible, and wise being? Should God not bless honest and hardworking people? Is flattery a mandatory requirement for getting God’s blessings?

Suppose you are going through an tough time in life. In such a situation, most believers would ask you to pray to God and seek his help. BUT WHY IS PRAYING NECESSARY? Does God not know about you or your current situation? Almost all religious texts emphasize that God knows all and sees all. Then do you still need to pray?

Religious texts claim that God knows and sees all, yet asks you to pray to him for help. This gives the impression of God that he only helps those who flatter him. This contradicts the nature of God that is claimed by believers. So my dear believers, I would like to see how you explain this.

So these were the six questions I talked about. How many could you answer? Even if you couldn’t answer any, you need not worry. I have an image that just might be useful to you:

Thank you for reading :)
