Donald Trump exists.

Let that sink in.

He’s real, not just a figment of our nightmares, so what does that imply about what most of humanity would call his Maker, the personal deity who supposedly created the universe?

Does Trump negate theism, proving all by his loathsomeness that there can’t be a benevolent deity overseeing the world?

Or do his troglodytic descents into supervillainy show that we have the freedom to do good or evil, the freedom that’s virtually miraculous in nature and that, therefore, testifies to a supernatural source of all things?

The philosophical question of God’s existence can’t be answered conclusively because it’s not well-formed enough to be testable or even fully meaningful. “God” can always be redefined to suit any piece of evidence that apparently conflicts with some creed or theology.

This is the purpose of theodicies, for instance: whereas you’d have thought the existence of so much unnecessary suffering in the world would count against happy-talking religions, priests and theologians retain their authority by defending their institution’s mythos. Like secretaries for presidents…
