Deconstructing Christianity
Where Do Atheists Go When We Die?
How can we ask that question? How can we not? No, this is not about a “Come to Jesus” moment. It’s just a small part of the search for home amongst a plethora of -isms.
Why Ask?
“What happens when you die?”
This is a question often asked by loved ones with a real concern for our immortal souls, but it is also asked by smart assess who think they got us with a gotcha question. Thirdly, it’s also a question that I have asked myself lately, because, as with many humans, I have a hard time contemplating a nevermore.
Recently YouTube has peppered me with a series of videos about atheists who die. The basic theme is tales of atheists who have come back from the dead to tell of the afterlife. It would be the first thing on my mind — make a YouTube video.
All of the stories feature the usual tell-tale signs of the true, North American, afterlife: a path leads towards a great light, an overwhelmingly comforting presence is felt, sometimes definitly Christ, sometimes only probably. Finally a dead relative blocks their path to eternal bliss and sends them back from where they came.
