Red tape is an idiom that refers to excessive regulation or rigid conformity to formal rules that is considered redundant or bureaucratic and hinders or prevents action or decision-making. It is usually applied to governments, corporations, and other large organizations (wikipedia). Red tapism has became a common phenomena in Bangladesh and third world countries now a days.

It was middle of 2017. One of my friend had to draw his tribal certificate for upcoming university admission which had to be approved by the local DC. Along with one of his friend he went to the DC office to draw the certificate. The process was long to draw just one certificate. He had to take a token which had his serial number. Internet connection was needed to generate the number. But unfortunately the internet connection was poor that day and the number was not generating. So they had to wait all day long for the internet connection. finally they got the serial number. But the office hours had already ended by then. So they went back to home which was about 40 km far from DC office and takes around 2 hours to travel. The next day again in DC office they had to write an application and attested their papers and certificates. After doing that they had to run through the desks for papers and still they couldn’t manage to get the certificate that day. Again the next day they appeared in the DC office again with all the papers done. Still they had to be waiting for the approval of the DC for hours. All of a sudden two people came to the DC office who were relatives of the local MP. They came to know that they also came to draw their certificates. But they had not enough papers to get approval. Then they had gone straight through the office with the papers and had it done within an hour. They had it done within an hour which took my friends 3 days straight to get it done. So it seems u got to have political powers to cut the red tape.

So, the concluding question is how is this ‘Red Tapism’ affecting the nation’s growth? No matter what government it is ‘Red Tapism’ exists. Who knows maybe someday general citizens wont get their death certificate also!
