As reported by The Huffington Post, a UN Committee has affirmed abortion as a human right.

I have always bounced between being for and being against abortion. I agree of course that women should be able to do with their bodies what they wish. But also, it isn’t just them involved, there are also two others — the unborn kid, and the father. I believe that an unborn child is as legitimate a person as anyone else.

In cases where the mother’s life is in danger, or in rape, we come to a really difficult position as it forces us to prioritise one life over another, which is something nobody should be comfortable with. Personally, as heartbreaking a decision it would be, first and foremost the mother’s life should be preserved. Likewise, victims of rape should absolutely have the choice to abort, as long as it is within an adequately short time period.

The legal development limit, after which an abortion is illegal, is 24 weeks in most cases. In my opinion this is much too far on. I’m no expert but surely by this stage, the foetus has started developing a personality, and personhood?

Yes it’s difficult, and yes being the sex which carries the foetus is a shit hand to be dealt, but that’s life, it’s nature and it’s currently beyond our abilities to offer an alternative. For want of a gentler way to put it; respectively, deal with it.

Inconvenience is not reasonable cause to abort. Preservation of the child’s life should always be the aim of the doctor involved.
