How to resolve Uber phone verification issues while traveling for work

Uber does not allow the use of a VOIP number to request a ride on your account.

It lets you create your profile with a virtual phone number and receive SMS codes, but you’ll encounter an error message while trying to get a ride from an Uber driver.

For those of you who enjoy using Google Voice, it means you’re out of luck when you need a ride. And even if you have a cellular phone number, it may not be the best option when you’re abroad since you may incur international data charges.

Here’s how to fix the problem.

Go to Use Uber without a smartphone.

Click on Request a ride to log into your web profile. If you encounter any issues, reach out to customer support. Ask Uber to allow your account for use without a smartphone. You should receive a response within 24 hours. Expect to confirm the name, phone number, and email address on the account.

Once you provide that info, you can use the web-based application. Log in at m.uber.com and test a ride. If you cancel it within 1 minute, then Uber will refund the cost of the trip to your payment method (by the next business day or so).

When you confirm everything is working on the web app, you can log into the mobile app if you prefer that interface.

Are you still encountering problems? Make sure you’re not using a debit card as the payment method. Learn why here.
