Communication is one of the main challenges for remote teams.

It’s crucial to find a balance between synchronous and asynchronous communication, too many and too few meetings, and so on.

But communication isn’t just between people on your team. Your brand communicates with the world.

The key to overcoming obstacles and establishing strong communication? Building a team with the same goal in mind. That’s how Elisabeth Diana, Deel’s Head of Communications, feels about working at Deel.

We talked to Elisabeth about her leadership style and the main challenges of working on a remote team.

Elisabeth Diana, Head of Communications

What are the biggest pros and cons of working in a distributed team?

Elisabeth: The flexibility of schedule and the trust in teammates to get work done on their own time are two critical advantages. And while I do miss the serendipitous conversations you have when in person, our team is getting good at bouncing things off of each other in the moment with calls and messages.

What’s the one thing that makes working at Deel special?

Elisabeth: The energy. Everyone is racing toward building and evolving this awesome product that helps more people worldwide get hired and have a great work experience.

Tell us about a challenge you need to overcome to make your team more efficient.

Elisabeth: We’re growing fast, and we need more talented people to help us build Deel’s product. It takes a while to find and hire the right candidates.

What do you value most in your coworkers?

Elisabeth: Determination to get things done. And talent to get them done well.

What are the main principles of your management style?

Elisabeth: Honesty and communication. We’ll never improve if we can’t deliver and receive open feedback. I also believe work should be fun — we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. I like to celebrate wins with the team and share lessons from mistakes. We’re all in this together, so collectively coming together around goals and milestones is essential to motivate people.

Where in the world is your team?

Elisabeth: London, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and the Bay Area. We are a truly global team!

What’s your favorite Deel moment so far?

Elisabeth: Sitting in on a sales call and hearing a potential customer light up when my colleague demoed our product for them. That was magic.
