Rappler’s Maria Ressa wins Nobel Peace Prize
Ressa and Novaya Gazeta’s Dmitry Muratov first journalists in 86 years to win the prize.
Oct. 11, 2021 — Journalist Maria Ressa, the co-founder and CEO of the Online Philippine News organization, Rappler, and Russia’s Dmitry Muratov, Editor-in-Chief of Novaya Gazeta, were awarded the Nobel Peace prize in an endorsement of free speech worldwide.
The two were recognized for,”their courageous fight for freedom of expression” in their countries, Chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen of the Norwegian Nobel Committee told a news conference on Friday, Oct. 8. She added, “they are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions. Free, independent and fact-based journalism serves to protect against abuse of power, lies and war propaganda.”
Ressa is the first Filipino Nobel Laureate and called the prize, in an interview with Reuters News Agency, “a global recognition of the journalist’s role in repairing, fixing our broken world.”
Ressa co-founded Rappler in 2012 and has come under fire from Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s regime who has attacked the site and threatened its staff. There are currently seven outstanding lawsuits pending against Ms. Ressa and Rappler that endanger its very existence.
