1. Introduction to the Concept of Unity
As we open our eyes and cast our gaze upon the universe, the first thing that catches our attention is the striking and perfect order that pervades all things. It is clear that each aspect of creation operates under a detailed system of laws and a delicate balance.
Upon closer examination, we begin to see this order and balance takes the form of a harmonious arrangement and distribution. It appears as though an unseen hand is constantly adjusting the system, keeping it fresh and vibrant. All things serve as a model, clothed in numerous, orderly, and proportionate forms.
Digging deeper into this setup, underneath the arrangement and distribution, we find wisdom and justice. Every action is guided by wisdom and considers a benefit. A truth or a gain is pursued. As our scrutiny intensifies, we witness a profoundly wise operation involving manifestations of power and far-reaching knowledge that envelops every characteristic of everything.
This order and balance that exists in all beings point to a universal arrangement and distribution; this arrangement and distribution, in turn, suggests a pervasive wisdom and justice; and this wisdom and justice unveil a power and knowledge that are omnipresent. It seems as if there is an All-Powerful and All-Knowing Being who stands behind these veils, evident to the intellect.
We also look at the beginning and end of everything, especially life-bearing entities. We notice that their origins, roots, fruits, and results follow such a pattern as if the seeds and roots are encapsulating the entire equipment of that being like a definition, like a program. And in the fruit and outcome, all the meaning of that life is filtered and accumulated, leaving behind its life history. It is as if the seed, the root, is a compilation of the creative commands and the fruit is akin to a catalogue of those creative commands.
We then examine the exterior and interior of these life-bearing entities. There are clearly traces of a highly wise power and an effective will. A power and strength that brings about creation, and a command and will that clothes it in form.
Indeed, all entities, when scrutinized from the perspective of their beginnings, appear as definitions of a knowledge; from their endings, as a plan and declaration of a Creator; from their exterior, as an artful and harmonious work of art of a Sovereign Creator; and from their interior, as an orderly machine of a Powerful Being. This state and quality announce, without any doubt or randomness, that nothing, no time, no space, can be outside the grasp of a Singular, Majestic Creator. Every entity and all things are managed in the grip of a Powerful and Willing Being. And they are beautified by a Merciful and Compassionate Being’s organization and kindness, and adorned with the decoration of a Benevolent Provider.
Indeed, for those who are conscious and have eyes on their faces, the order, balance, arrangement, and distribution that exist in the universe and in all entities reveal a singular, unique, omnipotent, willing, knowledgeable, wise being at the stage of unity. Indeed, there is unity in everything. And unity indicates one. For instance, the sun, which is the lamp of the world, is one. So, the owner of the world must also be one. For instance, air, fire, water which are the servants of life-bearing entities on the earth’s surface, are one. Therefore, the one who employs them and subjects them to us must also be one.
2. Observing Order and Balance in the Universe
It is during those tranquil moments of solitude, when I sit in silent contemplation, observing the grandeur of the universe, that my heart is filled with awe. The magnificent order and balance that pervades every facet of the universe is a testament to its unity. The synchrony of the stars, the rhythm of the tides, the cycle of the seasons — each moving in an ordained pattern, whisper a tale of perfect order and balance.
Have you ever considered the impeccable design of your own body? How the heart diligently pumps blood throughout your system, the lungs faithfully taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide, the brain ceaselessly regulating your body functions and enabling cognition — all functioning harmoniously to sustain life. Just as a single heartbeat out of sync can lead to chaos, a single entity out of order in this vast universe would wreak havoc.
However, such an incident is unfathomable. For this order and balance extend beyond the perceptible world, from the macrocosm to the microcosm. From galaxies that swirl in the vastness of space, the planets revolving in their specific orbits, to the cells in our bodies and the atoms that constitute them, there is an evident pattern, a law that governs them. What power could be responsible for such meticulous design if not an omnipotent and omnipresent Creator?
The Qur’an describes this profound concept beautifully, ‘Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.’ (3:190). As a believer, I understand these signs point towards the Unity of the Creator. It is clear to me, the Universe with its unerring laws and patterns, is a divine symphony conducted by a Singular Maestro.
It is a comforting thought, is it not? That there exists a Guiding Hand that ensures balance and maintains order, that everything is in its place, that we are not cast adrift in a chaotic world. We may not comprehend fully the scope of this Divine Plan, but we can take solace in the fact that the Universe functions according to a Divine Order. It is a poignant reminder that the same Hand that guides the stars in their paths, guides us in ours.
3. The Continuous Renewal and Arrangement
The essence of unity in the universe isn’t merely confined to its intricate design, but extends to its perpetual renewal and arrangement. The dawn breaks and gives way to the day, which gracefully bows out as dusk takes its place, followed by the serenity of the night. This continuous cycle of light and darkness renews and refreshes the world, preparing it for another day.
Consider the natural phenomena around us. The cycle of seasons, the rainfall that nourishes the earth, allowing life to flourish before the heat of the summer turns it into a life-sustaining bounty. The falling of leaves in autumn only to be replaced by new ones in spring, the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly, each a sign of constant renewal and arrangement.
This remarkable system of renewal isn’t confined to the natural world alone but can be observed in our lives too. As humans, we undergo continuous transformation. Childhood gives way to adolescence, which in turn paves the way for adulthood. Each stage of life comes with its own trials and triumphs, its own lessons and wisdom. This process of continual growth and change is a testament to the Creator’s wise and merciful planning.
And yet, despite these continuous changes, there remains a constancy, an unchanging pattern underlying all transformations. In the Qur’an, Allah says, ‘Such is the Creation of Allah: now show Me what is there that others besides Him have created.’ (31:11). This verse highlights the unity in the continuous renewal and arrangement of the universe. It’s a reflection of the unchanging essence of the One who initiated the process of creation and sustains it.
Understanding this concept instills a sense of peace within us. Yes, the world is continuously changing, we are continuously changing, but underlying it all is a profound unity, a single Divine Plan. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of change, we can find stability in the knowledge of the One who guides all transformations.
4. Wisdom and Justice: A Deeper Understanding
Delving deeper into the concept of unity, we arrive at an essential pillar: the Divine wisdom and justice underpinning the universe’s order. Often, we perceive events around us as arbitrary or chaotic. Yet, upon closer inspection, we discern patterns and principles guiding these occurrences, indicative of a grander plan. As Muslims, we recognize this as Divine wisdom, a wisdom far beyond our comprehension.
Consider the oft-quoted verse from the Qur’an: ‘And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.’ (Quran, 50:16). It attests to the profound wisdom behind our creation, our thoughts, our emotions, and our very existence. This verse highlights the supreme wisdom of Allah, the Just, who knows us better than we know ourselves.
The justice of Allah manifests itself in many ways. One of them is through the balance in the universe. Every creature, every phenomenon has a place and a purpose in the cosmic order. Nothing is redundant or superfluous. This divine equilibrium suggests the Creator’s justice, fairness, and wisdom.
We observe this justice within ourselves too. Allah has endowed us with the faculties of reason, emotion, and intuition, each having a specific role. These faculties, when balanced, enable us to lead a harmonious life. Imbalance, on the other hand, leads to chaos and discord. This inner balance, this sense of equilibrium, is a reflection of the Divine justice within us.
A profound understanding of this wisdom and justice allows us to navigate our lives more fruitfully. It assures us that every trial has a purpose, every joy a lesson. This realization is the key to internal peace, fortitude, and acceptance of the Divine Decree. It also provides us with a deeper appreciation of the unity inherent in the universe and the singular Entity orchestrating this unity, Allah the Wise, the Just.
5. The Manifestation of Power and Knowledge
In our exploration of unity, we now turn to two profound aspects: the manifestation of Power and Knowledge in the universe. To comprehend this, we must ponder upon the grandeur of the cosmos, the complexity of life, and the intricacies of existence. All these are a testament to an Entity whose Knowledge is boundless and Power, immense.
The Qur’an states, ‘His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent.’ (Quran, 57:2). This verse resonates with the notion of Divine Power and Knowledge. The creation and cessation of life, the rotation of planets, the changing of seasons — these occur by His will, demonstrating His absolute Power.
Every whisper of the wind, every ripple on the water, every leaf that falls from a tree happens in accordance with His Knowledge. He, the All-Knowing, is aware of the apparent and the hidden, the past, the present, and the future. As we observe the minute details of our existence, we witness a glimpse of this vast Knowledge.
We, too, are a manifestation of His Power and Knowledge. Our ability to think, to feel, to dream, and to aspire is a testament to His Knowledge. Our resilience in the face of adversity, our strength in the throes of despair, is a testament to His Power.
In understanding these manifestations of Power and Knowledge, we gain a more profound sense of unity. We realize that we are part of a larger, Divine order, a grand tapestry woven with the threads of Power and Knowledge. Such understanding fills us with awe and reverence, inspiring us to seek nearness to the One who is the source of all Power and Knowledge.
6. The Beginning and the End: A Holistic View
In our introspective journey, we now arrive at a crucial point — the Beginning and the End. This contemplation is a cornerstone of monotheistic understanding. Recognizing that there is an Ultimate Originator and a Final Destination presents a holistic view of our existence.
Imagine yourself standing on the shores of eternity, gazing at the unfathomable ocean of time. Where does it start? Where does it end? As a believer in Monotheism, I submit to the wisdom that both the beginning and the end are in the hands of the One. He is Al-Awwal (The First) and Al-Akhir (The Last).
The Qur’an says, ‘He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward; and He is, of all things, Knowing.’ (Quran, 57:3). This verse encapsulates the vastness of His presence. He is the origin of all beginnings and the conclusion of all ends. He is beyond the bounds of time and space, transcending our earthly limitations.
Our lives are like tiny droplets in this vast ocean. Each moment of our existence, every breath we take, is by His decree. We come into this world by His command and depart when He wills. Embracing this reality deepens our understanding of unity. It teaches us humility, surrender, and a profound sense of purpose.
Understanding the Beginning and the End brings peace amidst the chaos of life. The knowledge that our lives are part of a grand divine plan imbues our existence with meaning. It aids us in coping with the pain of separation, reminding us that every ending is but a new beginning in His eternal realm.
7. Examining the Living Beings: An Intricate Look
As we delve deeper into the essence of Monotheism, let’s turn our gaze upon the world of living beings, a testament to the diversity and unity of creation. I often find myself marvelling at the intricacy and harmony that pervade the living realm. How can such complexity and sophistication exist without a Master Designer?
The Quran compels us to observe the natural world, stating, ‘Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?’ (Quran, 88:17). And so, we do. We examine the creatures around us, each a marvel of design and function, each serving a unique role in the ecological balance.
From the industrious ant to the soaring eagle, every creature reflects the power, knowledge, and wisdom of the Creator. They carry out their roles with a precision and perfection that could only be achieved by Divine design. In their existence and functions, we glimpse the grandeur of the Divine, the One who sustains all life.
Such contemplation should stir in us a sense of humility and awe. How can we, mere creations, comprehend the full extent of His knowledge and power? And yet, He has endowed us with intellect, with the capacity to appreciate and learn from the intricate wonders of His creation.
Examining the living beings is thus an exercise in understanding our place in the grand scheme of creation. It helps us realize our dependence on the Creator and the unity inherent in His creation. It soothes the pain of separation by reminding us that we are part of a greater whole, interconnected and sustained by the One.
8. The Interior and Exterior: A Closer Examination
As we explore the depths of Monotheism, we must also consider our own selves, our interior and exterior. Just as a mirror reflects the physical, our hearts, ‘qalb’ in Arabic, mirror our spiritual state. Are we not a living paradox, the meeting point of the material and the spiritual?
In the Quran, God asks, ‘And We have certainly created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein’ (Quran, 50:16). What a profound statement that invites us to ponder! Our Creator is closer to us than we are to ourselves. So, what does this mean for us?
Every action, every word, every thought we have manifests our inner spiritual condition. Our bodies are but physical vessels carrying a far more valuable cargo: our souls. As we polish the mirror of our hearts, we can reflect the light of divine guidance more purely in our actions and words.
The struggles we face, the pain we endure, these are not without purpose. They can be means of inner purification, ways to refine our souls. This realization can change our perception of hardships, enabling us to find peace amidst the turmoil.
In this context, the pain of separation, from our Creator, from our loved ones, or from our former selves, can be a catalyst for inner growth. It pushes us to examine our interior, to reassess our actions, and to strive for alignment with the divine guidance. Thus, within this pain, there can be healing, growth, and, ultimately, unity.
9. The Majestic Creator: A Grand Conclusion
We have journeyed through the cosmos, examined the living beings, dived deep into the interior and the exterior, and what have we found? An intricate, interconnected dance of unity. Just as the planets circle the sun in harmonious orbits, everything in our existence revolves around the central pivot: our Majestic Creator.
We find that the pain of separation that we experience, in all its forms, is a longing for unity, for wholeness. This longing is woven into our very being. Because we come from One, and to that One, we shall return. The Quran states, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return’ (Quran, 2:156).
So, how do we navigate this longing? How do we cope with the pain of separation? By embracing the divine guidance, by aligning our hearts with the rhythm of the universe, by echoing the grand symphony of unity in our thoughts, words, and actions.
This journey has been a reminder that our struggles, our pains, our joys, and our triumphs are part of the grand tapestry of existence. Each thread, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to the overall pattern, and in that pattern, we see the manifestation of the Majestic Creator’s infinite power and knowledge.
In conclusion, as we strive to unveil the unity in the universe, let us not forget the unity within ourselves. As mirrors reflecting the divine light, may we find peace in knowing that in the grand scheme of things, we are not separate, but eternally connected, eternally one with our Creator.
