Just say the words “artificial intelligence” and most people imagine a doomsday scenario: fully autonomous robots taking over the world, when in fact, we are nowhere near such a reality.

The Age of Assisted Intelligence

Today, we use AI in most facets of life and it’s continuously helping improve our quality of life. This is known as assisted intelligence. AI is a part of the technology in our smartphones, it’s behind every CAPTCHA you fill out and it’s even part of Netflix optimizing suggestions based on your watch history, which naturally makes one wonder: what’s next?

Is AI really going to take over jobs?

If you are a programmer or work with machine learning (ML) (a subset of AI), you already know that it relies on a lot of human input and even then, it gets a lot of things wrong. An accuracy of ~80% is celebrated in ML research but there is still a lot of room from improvement.

For example, below is an example where AI is generating animals by imitating from a National Geographic trailer and it works great for animals but then it mistakes the sun for a lighter… (thanks for sharing, Gene Kogan)!

So, what is AI actually doing?

  1. AI is helping to improve efficiency. More and improved analytics help with decision making, accelerating growth, and making better policies in areas such as agriculture and mining.

2. AI is automating repetitive, standardized, and time-consuming tasks. When machines gather and analyze data, the rate of human error diminishes, allowing for more optimized workflows.

3. AI is complementing what humans can do. By helping advance on breakthroughs, humans are able to accelerate the time-to-discovery and shorten the timeline it takes to reach important milestones in areas such as healthcare and drug discovery.

4. It is creating more jobs, different kinds of jobs and making room for an entirely different skill set.

And humans are still very much a part of the picture because humans are the ones with intent. Humans dictate the rules of appropriate behavior for an autonomous car at a busy intersection. Humans write the complex code and humans fix what AI breaks.

As Lex Fridman puts it,

“One of the most powerful aspects of machine learning research is that in teaching an AI system what is “good” and “bad”, we have to also try to figure that out ourselves as humans.”

Imagine throwing a rock in the pond and watching the ripples fan out. AI is like the rock in the pond. It’s making waves and affecting our lives in many different ways.

AI has the power to revolutionize the world we live in. Think of AI-generated entertainment that cuts down the production time, cost, and opens up a whole new creative avenue by optimizing the existing workflow. The possibilities are endless with Procedural.AI, the first of its kind AI-driven design solution using natural language to create the world of your dreams.
