The use of UAV’s is not only bound till industries, but biologists and researchers are also showing keen interest in the drone technology. Drones are being used to count whales, check bird nests and nabbing poachers. Recently a drone has been designed that can hover within fast-flowing swarms of bats.

The Chirocopter is equipped with a microphone and a thermal camera that can notice bats by observing their body heat. Moreover, this Chirocopter can be placed anywhere in 3D space.

The team tested this device outside a cave in New Mexico where almost 800000 Brazilian bats prevails. Here, the Chirocopter was flown for about 84 minutes, and scientists recorded 46 echolocation chirps per minute.

Scientist’s states that this technology could also be further used to study how bats move.
