A fish or a drone? Researchers at MIT have developed a robot that moves like a fish that helps scientists to observe marine life. The team at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) unveils SoFi.

SoFi doesn’t have any noisy propellers, and uses the same tail movement as of fish. This fish like drone can be remotely controlled to move in every direction. “To our knowledge, this is the first robotic fish that can swim untethered in three dimensions for extended periods of time,” said CSAIL PhD candidate Robert Katzschmann.

SoFi took a test ride for about 40 minutes at a depth of 50 feet and managed various currents. “A robot like this can help explore the reef more closely than current robots, both because it can get closer more safely for the reef and because it can be better accepted by the marine species,” said Cecilia Laschi, Biorobotics Professor. Some development and innovations will be made by the MIT team to make it swim faster and automatically follow real fish.
