According to data from the World Intellectual Property Office, the financial year 2016–17 shows patents filed for drone-related technology hits 5301, more than four times than the prior years.

“Filing a patent now represents people banking on the future,” says Gwilym Roberts, Partner at Kilburn & Strode. The increase in drone flights also suggests the battery life of drone can be extended.

The Accounting giant KPMG also got involved in AI and the emerging technologies to meet the growing demand from clients. Murray Raisbeck, who works in the team, mentioned, “There’s been a big supply push from the drone manufacturers and now the supply and demand sides are starting to meet.”

The insurance industry is also looking at the best ways, to insure drones, whichever sector they are being used in. “Most drones are in the ‘proof of concept’ stage but everyone is looking at how they can use the technology efficiently,” added Murray Raisbeck.
