Wei Luo, DeepMap COO and Head of Product, presents OADF keynote, Sept. 23, 2020

DeepMap COO and Head of Product, Wei Luo, delivered the keynote address today to members of the Open AutoDrive Forum (OADF), an organization focused on standards for autonomous driving.

Speaking via Zoom to an audience of (physical) attendees in Germany as well as (virtual) participants around the world, Wei explained the critical role of high-definition (HD) maps in the safety and performance of autonomous vehicles (AVs).

“AVs need to know lane level rules and need to have the ability to take proactive actions on the road to enhance driving smoothness and safety. When an HD map has errors, the vehicle can fail to localize and fail to take appropriate actions,” she said. “The richer the data is in the HD map, the more ADAS and AV features it can help to unlock. That’s why we build Level 4 map technology and apply it to all autonomy levels.”

Regarding absolute vs. relative accuracy, “a good HD map should have both,” said Wei. “If a map doesn’t have global accuracy, it can be hard to compare and use cases become hard to support. We consider three accuracy metrics: absolute accuracy, relative accuracy, and localization accuracy.”

Wei mentioned that DeepMap technology has been applied across 100+ projects in complex operational design domains (ODDs) around the world. DeepMap customers include leading automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and technology companies.

Additional OADF speakers included: Satoru Nakajo, University of Tokyo; Martin Schleicher, Elektrobit; and András Csepinszky, SENSORIS. See the meeting agenda here.

Today’s OADF meeting precedes the NDS (Navigation Data Standard) Public Conference, which will kick off tomorrow. DeepMap would like to thank Markus Junker, OADF Project Office, for the invitation to present.

Background on OADF: In November 2015, the NDS e.V., the ADASIS forum and SENSORIS representatives decided to coordinate on important questions for autonomous driving in an ‘Open AutoDrive Forum (OADF)’. The OADF is intended to give all stakeholders the opportunity to present their issues and to jointly work on standardized solutions across different standardization organizations and companies.
